Navigating Imposter Syndrome
In my career as a director, I've had the privilege of creating ads that capture the heartwarming innocence of babies for some well-known brands. From Pampers to Watsons. Each project had its own hurdles, but they were all worth it in the end.
Ever feel like a fraud as a content creator? Yeah, me too. Sometimes, just saying 'content creator' makes me cringe. But hey, here I am, figuring it out as I go.
Imposter syndrome has been a constant companion on my journey – from aspiring director to singing in a band. It's that nagging voice in the back of your head, whispering doubts and insecurities.
But you know what? I've found a couple of things that help me keep pushing forward:
- Be kind to yourself. It's easier said than done, trust me. As my own worst critic, showing myself compassion can be a challenge. But I've learned the importance of cutting myself some slack and treating myself with the same kindness I'd show to a friend.
- Focus on progress. I've adopted a strategy of setting small, achievable goals for myself. Whether it's finishing a script or wrapping up a video, each task completed is a step forward. It's something I picked up from my jiu-jitsu buddies – every day you train, you get a little bit better. I've applied that same principle to my craft, celebrating the small victories along the way.
So, here I am, navigating the ups and downs of the creative journey, one step at a time. And if you're dealing with imposter syndrome too, just know you're not alone. We're all in this together, figuring it out as we go.
